Airport security is of paramount importance to prevent plane hijackings and compromising of patron safety. Biometrics is one solution that can be integrated with various other security solutions to improve the security at airports. At this stage it does seem a bit difficult to implement biometrics for passengers, but it is possible to implement biometrics for secure areas to control access to and from the facilities according to the level of authorization. It will also reduce theft by airport personnel and help to enhance the image of an airport company as one that can be trusted. IDTek has been awarded the contract to install biometrics based systems at the Oliver Tambo International Airport. The system used is that of SAGEM known for superior biometric technologies. Smaller airports will also benefit from such access control and should consider upgrading their security with the state of the art technology as well.
